Secrets to escaping the investment rut

Posted by Paul Wilson

Calling all property investors – tell me if this sounds all too familiar:

- There never seems to be enough hours in the day

- You haven’t yet mastered the work-family-investment balancing act

- You know you could be achieving better results with your existing investments, but you just don’t have the time, energy or knowledge to do so

- And you’ve been meaning to get on to your next investment property, but it’s just, not, happening.

Don’t stress, you’re not alone – I’ve seen many property investors plagued with these issues and understandably, it’s frustrating.

Being able to move forward with your investments is the overarching key to growing a successful property portfolio – but how can you achieve this when stuck in an investment rut?

Re-focus

Where do you want to buy?

What kind of return are you looking for?

How many properties do you want?

Re-focus on the key points that motivated you to invest in the first place and assess whether they’re still relevant to your situation. It’s all too easy to lose track of the big picture when you get bogged down by day-to-day life. Define exactly what needs to be completed in order to achieve your investment goals, then make time to achieve them.

Understand you can only do so much

I’m confident that at some point in your investment journey, you’ve spread yourself too thin – both mentally and financially. This is no good for your health, your productivity or your wallet. Understanding what you are capable of is key to meeting your own expectations with your investments. Possessing good time management skills and being realistic about your investment goals will help to rationalise your chaotic state.

Ask for help

If the part about not having enough time, energy or knowledge struck a chord with you, and you genuinely want to move forward with your investments, I advise you to reach out for help. It is not a sign of weakness, simply a determination to achieve great results. Enlisting the services of a property mentor or buyer’s agent will help you to keep your eyes on the prize while maintaining momentum. The power of leverage must not be overlooked – even the most successful and savvy property investors had help at some point.
